Exciting sunday afternoon

Posted on April 29th, 2007 by hamstar

So I’m lying in bed today about 4 or 5pm reading my book “Dude Where’s my country” by Michael Moore, and I hear sirens coming down the road… Really fast… and I hear vehicle engines screaming to slow down. Oh yeah.. car chase… car chase + the sharp left hander by my house = high probability of a crash :)

I jumped out of my bed as I heard the squealing of tyres and threw open my curtains just in time to see a beamer (I thought it was an RPS13 at first) slide out to the right onto the other side of the road and then spin right around going backwards and sliding back onto the other side of the road. I heard a clunk and it jumped the curb and then saw the undercover cop car come round the corner and slow down.

My whole family yelled out “fuck” a few times in a few seconds in succession as I struggled to get some clothes on while running around the house tying to find the damn digital camera. My mum pushes me out of the way and says “wheres the fucking phone the guy has jumped out and he’s running down the road, white singlet and jeans!”.

Cool a runner I thought, as my mum asks the number for emergencies… “ahh 1-1-1″ I said… dunno what that was about. Got the digi and ran out the door, the guy had apparently run behind the petrol station and into the paddocks… but the cop was just sitting in his car up by the beamer.

Final resting place

I ran up to the crash, my mate had come running out as well. Started taking photos and stuff. I went and said to the cop, “Did you see where he went? He ran behind the petrol station!” and he just sat there and said “ohh yeah we’re getting the dogs out.”. I was like oook, why don’t you just chase after him you fat fuck but yeah.

Quite a few people pulled over and it turns out that the dude in the beamer was racing a guy in a Mitsi Celeste from like pine valley road and overtook a whole lot of people including the undercover cop in a Honda Accord! Then they came round my corner, and the Celeste got round it but the beamer couldn’t handle it and spun out.

Mitsi Celeste The corner

Wasn’t too badly damaged except for the rear right wheel as you can see in the following pic, however the cops found a load of meth lab stuff in the car like 2 hours later after they had taken it apart. The cop dogs didn’t even get there till bout 1 or 2 hours later so they never caught the dude.

Forked wheel

They would have finally pulled the car out at about 10pm I guess.

You can see more photos of the crash here.

Another day Flathunting

Posted on April 28th, 2007 by hamstar

Me and Troy been driving round looking for flats again today… it’s hard work man. We’re looking around the shore, but want somewhere central like Sunnynook or something. Anyway, we found a few nice ones but have to call the agents on monday cos they were all booked out today. We found one we really like on Coronation Rd in Hillcrest.. 4 bedrooms, double garage, $430 a week. Wanna try to get an appointment on monday. Also found another one in Meadowood which looks quite nice. Need to make an appointment for that too.

Then this arvo my family took me to birthday dinner (for tuesday) at Breakers in Lincoln Rd out west. Very nice. Then drove dads car home and realised how much I hate automatics! Need my manual..

New screen!

Posted on April 27th, 2007 by hamstar

So my parents bought me a new screen for my 21st. 19″ Philips 190B7B LCD screen. It so awesome, only one USB on it though. Had to get my PC working before I could use it, found my RAM has died… theres a 512mb stick down the drain. Luckily had another one in the cupboard but I think it is faulty too.

LCD screen with Fedora Core 6 and beryl/emerald running sweeet!

Anyway, the screen is awesome booted, up Fedora, changed the res to 1280×1024 and it looks beautiful. You really need an LCD for linux (well, gnome anyway) cos the title bars and stuff are a bit chunky. Beryl and Emerald look beautiful! Its incredible how nice this screen is.

The screen turned off

The one thing I don’t like about it is that it doesn’t raise as high as I’d like it to but its OK. Still have both my 17″ CRT’s sitting on the desk, the screen is just on one of my servers (a converted D510). Other than that that its wicked, I can watch a movie, surf trademe, and something else at the same time. Kickass!

LAMB OF GOD!!!

Posted on April 26th, 2007 by hamstar

So we went to the Lamb of God concert here… kicks ass! It was held at The Powerstation in Mt Eden. Kicked ass, those dudes are so awesome. But holy fuck it was loud, still deaf… Lots of hot goth chicks there too… especially one (two actually but the tall one was really cute), that was dancing near where me and Troy were standing. She was gorgeous… I should have talked to her when she sat next to me, but I froze up.. oh and I have Girlfriend already.

And if you thought death metal concerts were all you get smashed if you fall over… some guy bailed out of his wheelchair and down a few steps, and instantly there were like 5 people helping him back into it. I don’t know where he was when the circle pit opened up though lol.

Got me a shirt too, mean one.. heres a pic:
LOG Shirt

They only had XL when I got there and it was $40.. worth it though. I wanted a hoodie but they were $70…

How cool is that!?

Posted on April 23rd, 2007 by hamstar

So I go to get my stuff back from the old telescum server and I find that my account has been locked and the domain tells me to contact them. Seems as though that company took over the server that we were on and found that we were “squatting” on it (i.e. not paid for access at all) and locked us.

So I gave them a polite email and asked them to let me access so I could get my stuff back…

So they let me… sweet as, ftp’d everything direct to this server, exported my databases and everything, all done and they lock my account again. Sweet. Today I go to import the telescum forum databases to the server and it only has 14 tables and gives me an error. I look at the SQL source and it seems that the export crashed halfway through!

I really didn’t wanna make a new forum and piss everyone off by making them reg again, so I gave iqthink another polite email, and asked them for access again, or a database export and told them the db name. I got a prompt reply back with the sql source file for the forum database attached! How awesome!

I think it is excellent that this internet company was kind enough to give me access to all my old stuff and help me out when they weren’t obliged to – I never paid a cent to them, or the company before them, and still they help me out. What awesome people.

So if you ever need hosting, and want people that will come through for you no matter what, check out www.iqthink.com

God damn rappers

Posted on April 15th, 2007 by hamstar

I have to say, all that rap crap and “urban” music/culture is so stupid. I was watching that “Don’t you wish your girlfriend was hot like me” music video, and there’s half naked girls jumping around everywhere. Sure they’re nice to look at but that kind of degradation of women should be kept in places like porno and mens magazines. Not the mainstream media.

Especially the things that they sing about, some of it is explicit and this music is accepted by the majority of society. The kids don’t even know what they are singing about and the parents don’t even care. You see little kids walking round with their parent’s wearing all the “homie-g” stuff, and its like WTF?! Take a look at your kids for Christ’s sake!

I have recently watched the movie Idiocracy. Although the movie is kind of a pile of crap, it is about two human army experiments that travel 500 years into the future to discover that the world has become overrun by stupidity, because of anti-intellectualism and dysgenics.

So thinking about that, I swear that this music will turn the worlds population into bumbling idiots that are OK with the degradation of women, shooting people for wearing different colours, and using the english language like a fucking retard!

Now you take a look at metal for instance, and look at the messages that are delivered through it. Although it is a medium that is probably too hardcore to be accepted by the mainstream, the messages definitely should. People have called metal “suicide music” or think that it will give homicidal tendancies, when really, when I hear urban music I want to kill people.

Lamb of God for instance, one of their songs (Ashes Of The Wake) has a voiceover of an American soldier in Iraq saying how

“I honestly feel we’re committing genocide over here,
I don’t believe in killing civilians, and I’m not going to kill civilians for the United States Marine Corp.”

Then you have Hatebreed who’s song Another Day, Another Vendetta proclaims the reason for the angryness of their songs;

Well the answer is plain to see
Just look around at this world that we’re living in.
It’s die or let die

All I see is killing
Another day, another vendetta
There is so much suffering
Another day, another vendetta

And then the amount of homeless in the country…

I see the homeless standing out on the streets
On every corner, they’re asking for money
I try to help them whenever I can but sometimes
I can’t afford to help myself.

…while the leaders spend all their money on foreign wars instead of domestic issues:

I see diseases and modern plagues of our time
The greed of our leaders have made them blind
To our problems, they spend millions over seas
While people right here are fighting wars everyday

In the same vein, there is of course, perhaps the most conspiracal band around, System Of A Down, one song of which, BOOM! proclaims again, how so much money is being spent on war, when it could be better spent on saving people that need saving.

Manufacturing consent,
Is the name of the game,
The bottom line is money,
Nobody gives a fuck.
4000 hungry children leave us per hour,
From starvation,
While billions are spent on bombs,
Creating death showers.

But System of a Down have many, many conspiratist songs, althrough the are much more poetic and somewhat cryptic than other bands.

Seriously, this stuff is what humanity needs to listen to, to think for themselves, not listen to this drivel delivered through the mainstream music genre’s.

Makes you think that there is something bigger going on here – like the goverments are trying to making us stupid by condoling this absolute rubbish.

Anyway, if you want to look up any meanings to any songs that are actually deep enough to have meanings, check out songmeanings.net.

Open a program from one linux box on another boxes screen

Posted on April 7th, 2007 by hamstar

How cool would it be to be able run a program from your main computer, but have the window for it come up on say, your laptop while you’re sitting on your bed? Thats what I do.

My main problem is that I can’t get internet on my laptop at home. I’m on dialup and my external modem only connects by serial, which my laptop doesn’t have. Problem.

Solution. I can ssh into my main box which has the modem, connect it to the net and run firefox and it will open it on my laptop screen, using the network. This is a built in feature of X, the display manager for linux.

This HOWTO assumes the following:

  1. You already have ssh setup on the main box
  2. The main box is called serj with an IP of 10.0.0.1
  3. The other box is called malakian with an IP of 10.0.0.4

Here’s how ya do it:

  1. Open up a console window
  2. Add the other box to your X “allow” list by typing the following:
    xhost serj

  3. Find out your display number and remember it (lets say it is 1). Type:
    echo $DISPLAY

  4. SSH into your main box from the other box
    ssh serj -l <em>username</em>

  5. Once you’ve logged in, you need to edit the DISPLAY variable to be the IP and display number (1) of the box you’re on and export it:
    DISPLAY=10.0.0.4:1; export DISPLAY

  6. Once you’ve done that check that it is set properly by echo’ing the DISPLAY variable again. It should show 10.0.0.4:1
    echo $DISPLAY
  7. Now simply run a program like firefox from the command line and the window will open on your box:
    firefox

When you run a program it will open with all the settings from your main box. Unfortunately it won’t work with 3D games but there are a few things it could be useful for e.g.:

  1. Administering one of your screenless servers through an actual GUI (provided you installed with KDE/gnome/some other window manager)
  2. Opening dirty sites on your friends/workmates PC. Open a console, set your display to your workmates IP/display and run
    firefox http://nastyjapanesegirls.com

. Of course it will be running of your profile so he won’t get done for porn if you do this at work… you will.

There is one draw back though, all sound will run on the main box.

Black Sheep

Posted on April 7th, 2007 by hamstar

What can I say? A horror movie with sheep? So cool. This movie was quite funny in parts but really freeking gory and in some places quite scary. I guess it was a little over the top and ludicrous but it was fun and captured a lot of NZ farm culture and stuff. I’m proud of this movie. The effects were done by Weta Workshop, the same people that did Lord of the rings.

Definitely go and see this movie. It is cool. Especially if you’re in a country other than NZ.

Cowabunga dude!

Posted on April 5th, 2007 by hamstar

So went to see Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles last night with Tasha. She said we’d be the oldest ones there but I knew she’d be wrong cos its all the older kids who remember turtles from when they were young that would be going.

It wasn’t a bad movie, could’ve had more stuff going on in it, but was still fun. The CGI was pretty good, the only thing I found a little strange was the legs went thin then real big near the feet but you get used to it.

The voices were matched pretty welll too, and the personalities were good, Mikey is still fuckin crack-up.

Overall I thought it was a cool movie, but anyone who doesn’t know the turtles or isn’t into them would think it was a pile of shit.

Water in the spark plugs?

Posted on April 4th, 2007 by hamstar

So today I decided to take the car that I am selling, for a little drive. Boy did it run like shit. My Bluebird had never performed like that before. It was screwed, sounded like it was running on 3 cylinders and going up hills was a mission.

Anyway was gonna pull the spark plug out and check em, and find that the spark plug hole in cylinder one was filled with water when I pulled the lead out. Like, full. So me and dad had to shove rags in with a screwdriver to soak up all the water.

After that, started her up, and she goes fine! That thrust bearing is still a bitch though…
